Boogie-talk is a mailing list devoted to guitars, guitar amplifiers, guitar effects, guitar speakers, guitar pickups, guitar technique and other guitar-related information. We also sometimes talk about basses, bass amps, etc., recording, cars, philosophy and marriage, but usually we do the guitar thing.

Boogie-talk history
Boogie-talk was started around 1993 as "an email forum for Mesa-Boogie owners, users, and future owners." I was interested both in guitar amps made by MESA/Boogie and how the Internet community was beginning to blossoming. I had to add the 'future owners' part because I didn't have a MESA/Boogie of my own in 1993!

The list was facilitated initially by the generosity of Washington & Lee University Computing where I was a part-time employee. It was hosted there until 1997 when David Swanger rescued it from extinction and moved it to Auburn University. Thanks, David! In January of 2005, Boogie-talk moved to Boogie-talk.com - the end of the .edu era.

In December of 2008, the Boogie-talk list was moved to its new home at Google Groups!

I recently found a 1993 post to rec.music.makers.guitar where I was trying to describe Boogie-talk: "Much discussion goes on about new products, old products, mods, tubes, etc." The list has grown into something beautiful in the last 12 years, retaining many of its original members. We all float in and out of the discussions as time permits.

Boogie-talk has had anumber of member summits, in the northwest (BTNW), Baltimore and elsewhere.

Boogie-talk's mailing list and events have solicited responses like:

  • "a very low-noise high-signal group"
  • "It sounds like Guitar Center in there, except everybody has tone and talent."
  • "...It all came down to playing music, together, on a nice summer night."
